The retirees in Florida have taken it on the chin. Due to the verdict in the Zimmerman case, they’ll now be losing out on any hope of seeing Stevie Wonder perform live anytime soon unless they’re willing to load up the RV and head toward…well, who the hell knows where?  Ol’ Stevie is going to boycott Florida and anywhere else there’s a version of the “stand your ground” law because he’s pretty upset about race relations in this country.  That, and the Zimmerman verdict.  That’ll teach all those racist retirees, or as we call them up here in Cow Hampshire, “snow birds that shouldn’t be driving.”  Oops, not all of them are white.  That’ll still show ‘em in Florida though.  Oh, by the way, with better than 30 states having some version of “stand your ground”, who knows where Stevie will be performing next.  If he’s true to his word, he’s left himself with around 16 states to pontificate in.  Such a shame too.  Music that has done so much to bridge the racial divide is reserved only for those who agree with the black man.

Let’s play a fun game of what if, rearrange the living room furniture a little, swap some pieces of the Trayvon-Zimmerman story around and see what we get.  Let’s set up the playing board.

Two white guys, guy number one older, a slightly paunchy little guy on his back, guy two, younger, slightly more athletic, straddling guy number one, his hands full of guy number one’s lapel as he tries to part guy number one’s hair with a concrete sidewalk.  Up and down he lifts guy number one, again and again driving the back of his opponent’s head into the sidewalk until guy number one pulls out his equalizer and ends the drama.

No one notices, except for maybe the locals, wondering what happened to the face-eating zombies we’ve been reading about in Florida.  Nobody looks like Obama’s son, so Jesse, Al and the rest of the blame whitey crowd go about their daily search for ways to divide the country.  No harm, no foul.

Funny thing about chess. The rules are the same for either color..

Switch. Both guys are black. (Is that an acceptable description, or did I just piss someone off?) Anyway, what happens now?  Nothing, except probably the deranged white supremacy groups throw a party after which the main stream media heaps scorn, derision and ridicule upon them, one of the few times the rest of us find anything to agree with the press about.  Since they both look like Obama’s son, he can’t pick sides lest he looks like he favors one son over another, so he goes golfing.  Al, Jesse and the rest of the blame whitey crowd babble about how racism drove them to violence because they were disadvantaged, after which Al, Jesse, Barack and the press drop their interest and ignore the story much the same way they ignore the deaths of all the other young boys in Detroit who look like Obama’s son.

Switch.  Guy one on his back is not a white Hispanic, whatever the hell that is, but he’s black.  Guy two on top is now the white Hispanic and he meets his demise at the end of the gun.  Hmm, now Barack’s could-be son is the victor but has killed a man.  The “stand your ground” law is hailed as a success and the New Black Panther Party celebrates one less breathing white person.  Jesse, Al and the rest of the hate whitey crowd demand that charges be dropped because the white guy struck him first and then continued to smash his head into the ground.  They have a benefit for his defense fund staring Stevie Wonder who debuts his new single “Ebony and Concrete.” Eric Holder investigates the dead man for a hate crime as the department of justice pays to have crowds protest in front the home of the dead man’s family.

Let’s make one more switch. Change the parameters. No gun, no one dies.  Is the guy on top now charged with assault or does he go free because he was the correct color? Would or should your answer to that question change with the color of the game pieces? Does the fact that he was the first one to resort to violence mean anything? Or are certain segments of our population immune to any results from their actions?  Would the president and the attorney general take sides?

No, I’m not arguing that Trayvon deserved to die, even though at a minimum, he assaulted Zimmerman, whether you like it or not it or wish it not to be true.  Zimmerman should have just stayed in the car; Trayvon should have kept his fists to himself.  You can boycott. You can threaten to investigate for hate crimes. You can, if you’re the right color, even put a bounty on the survivors’ head, but you’ll never get to the equality you claim to be fighting for if you can ever see any situation where your color is more important than the laws that should govern us all regardless of whether we are “white Hispanics” or have a hoodie pocket full of skittles.
